Table as Rule of Life

Sunday, October 20, 2024

Almighty God, who after the creation of the world rested from all your works and sanctified a day of rest for all your creatures: Grant that we, putting away all earthly anxieties, may be duly prepared for the service of your sanctuary, and that our rest here upon earth may be a preparation for the eternal rest promised to your people in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Collect for Sabbath Rest, Book of Common Prayer

“Be still, and know that I am God!

    I am exalted among the nations,

    I am exalted in the earth.”

Psalm 46:10

Daily Prayer for a Rule of Life

May our lives be a prayer;

May God work through our prayers;

May our work be an answer;

To God’s will working through us.

May we rest in God’s love;

May God’s rest feed our souls;

May our table be open;

May we welcome friends and foes.

May the poor be our neighbors;

May our neighbors be blessed.

Amen

Table as Rule of Life

Monday, October 21, 2024

Opening

Though the kings roar and the Earth teeters, we know you take us gently by the hand, leading us with mercy through the thorns and rubble into your Shalom.  Guide our paths this day to broaden your table and walk in your ways of peace.

Silence

Listen and embrace God’s gift of peace to share in the midst of anxiety and the tumult of life.

Prayers of Gratitude

Sometimes when we are shaken or it feels like the world is scheming against us, we need reminding of your steadfast grace ever embracing us.  This morning we share the ways you continue to bless us, and we give you thanks for your providence and care.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our loving God, who is heaven and here among us, we honor your name as sacred and holy. May we work with you to establish your new order of justice, peace, and love here on Earth. Provide for us, day by day, all the things we need.

And help us, through forgiving others, to accept forgiveness. Guide us away from the things that tempt us so we may receive the grace you offer.

For you reign in the power that comes from love, which is your glory forever and ever. Amen.

Reading

1 Samuel 8:1-18

In this election season, consider how our approach to the good of the commonwealth impacts our choice of leader and common life together.

Intercessions

When life surprises us and it feels like the very Earth is shaking beneath us, the Psalmist tells us God comes and holds the pillars of our lives steady.  Lift up the needs and desires of you and your neighbors to God, who is always more ready to listen than we are to ask.

Daily Prayer for a Rule of Life

May our lives be a prayer;

May God work through our prayers;

May our work be an answer;

To God’s will working through us.

May we rest in God’s love;

May God’s rest feed our souls;

May our table be open;

May we welcome friends and foes.

May the poor be our neighbors;

May our neighbors be blessed.

Amen

Sending Forth

Go in peace, to love and serve the Lord.  Go in peace, become the Living Word.  Christ on our lips, and Christ in our hearts, may we share God’s love to the world.

Table as Rule of Life

Tuesday, October 22, 2024

Opening

Sometimes when God calls us to lead, like Saul we feel inadequate or ill-equipped and want to hide.  Let us remember with awe all the amazing work of God’s hand, like Leviathan.  Recall that same power of God is working through us, anchoring our souls and urging us to seize the hope set before us.

Silence

Prayers of Gratitude

When life ways heavy on us and we feel like we can’t move forward, God redirects us to the beauty, hope, and resilience in Creation around us and sets a table for us to share.  Let us give thanks for the interconnectedness of Creation and the wonderous deeds of God, large and small, in our lives and all around us.

Amen.

Reading

Hebrews 6:13-20

Reflect on the hope found in Christ as our forerunner and pioneer in Faith and what it means to be priests in the Order of Melchizedek.

Intercessions

Believing that Christ the Great High Priest still intercedes on our behalf, let us lift up our concerns for ourselves, our neighbors, and our world to God’s heavenly altar.

Daily Prayer for a Rule of Life

May our lives be a prayer;

May God work through our prayers;

May our work be an answer;

To God’s will working through us.

May God’s rest feed our souls;

May our table be open;

May we welcome friends and foes.

May the poor be our neighbors;

May our neighbors be blessed.

Table as Rule of Life

Wednesday, October 23, 2024

Opening

While Jesus gathered at table with his disciples, he took a towel and basin and washed their feet!  Lord, as we gather together today, give us open hearts to feel your leadership and willing hands to serve our neighbors as friends.

Silence

Prayers of Gratitude

Like Samuel, sometimes we must stop and remember all the ways God has guided and protected our paths even when we have been pigheaded or rebellious.  Lift up to God your thanksgiving and praise for the abundance of God’s Table and all the opportunities, big and small, God provides us to follow our Master as servants.

Amen.

Reading

John 13:1-17

Consider Christ’s acts at the table and how sometimes we forget we are called to serve instead of be served.

Intercessions

Although the people of Israel harkened not to Samuel’s counsel to resist the desire for a king to reign over them instead of God, Samuel did not cease to pray for the people of Israel.  Let us consider our needs and the needs of others, especially those that we might find hard to deal with or difficult to understand.

Opening

I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad.

O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together.

Silence

.

Prayers of Gratitude

Sometimes we take stock of storehouses and are filled with pride!  Sometimes that pride causes us to flaunt our blessings to others in ways that may risk our long-term well-being.  In gratitude and humility, let us offer our thanks to God for all that he provides in both lean and bountiful times.

The Lord’s Prayer

Reading

Jeremiah 23:9-15

Consider how those who speak for God today are like the prophets during Jeremiah’s time.  What lessons can we glean from this Jeremiah as we seek to prophetically lead and gather others to Christ’s table to share God’s bounty.

Intercessions

Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like the watercourses in the Negeb.  May those who sow in tears     reap with shouts of joy.  Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.

What burdens do we lift to God today, who can transform our anxiety and sorrow to joy and abundance to share?

May God work through our prayers;

May our work be an answer;

To God’s will working through us.

Opening

O taste and see that the Lord is good;    happy are those who take refuge in him.

Silence

.

Prayers of Gratitude

Like Abraham who experienced a blessing and gave thanks to God through offering a tithe to God’s Priest-King Melchizedek, what blessings and graces do we find in our lives today to lift up in thanks to God?

The Lord’s Prayer

Our loving God, who is heaven and here among us, we honor your name as sacred and holy. May we work with you to establish your new order of justice, peace, and love here on Earth. Provide for us, day by day, all the things we need.

Reading

Nehemiah 1:1-11

Consider if the Church today like Jerusalem in Nehemiah’s time?  How are we called, like Nehemiah, to be repairers of the breach?

Intercessions

I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.

Look to him, and be radiant, so your[a] faces shall never be ashamed.

This poor soul cried and was heard by the Lord and was saved from every trouble.

The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him and delivers them.

O taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are those who take refuge in him.

What needs do we have to lift to the Lord this day?

Reading

Mark 8:22-26

How do we need Jesus to touch and heal us, so we can see the world in the same focus as Jesus?  With eyes that see, who might we need to invite to our table that we had overlooked before?

A blind man’s friends brought him to Jesus and asked Jesus to heal him.  Who do we need to lift to the Lord this day in prayer for healing and grace?
